I entirely agree with you, this article is very good. Thinking in Flash means - no limits. Thinking in HTML5 - means thinking about limits.
Believe me or not a lot of agencies around the world would say - 'for nearly all of the banner campaigns we’ve worked on, it would be possible for something like SWIFFY to continue delivery of 75% ads not learning our flash designers and animators HTML5. They still can work in Flash IDE!

I see nearly all of what I wrote above being applicable to banner campaigns as well. If you want to use HTML then you have to understand the limitations and design around them.

HTML5 might be an option if the requirements are simple animation and interactivity is very minimal or left out. However, for nearly all of the banner campaigns we've worked on, it would be impossible for something like SWIFFY to convert to HTML. They either use too much interactivity or rely on streaming video to display content.

Would be also good to share awareness of global advertisement aspects. Most of people working in Flash are not website or apps designers. They do ads i.e. Flash banner campaigns. For perfect global penetration still in AS2 and Flash Player < 8. It means that most important question for them is how to create animated creative content in HTML5. The answer came from Google - SWIFFY. http://www.google.com/doubleclick/studio/swiffy/gallery.html - Flash IDE as animation tool for HTML5 is the answer.

Jason, that's a good point and the rabbit hole goes even deeper when talking apps. It probably could take up it's own blog post.

Indeed, it is rare that a client will have a budget (or timeline) to do separate native apps from the ground up for a campaign. Doing native dev on iOS, Android, and possibly Win Mobile or Blackberry is pretty unrealistic in most cases. AIR presents a solid strategy when the scope of the app's features are capable cross-platform or specific types of apps targeted at one platform. Currently it may not be the best when it needs to feel like a native app with lots of components or if hardware acceleration is required. But if you can develop one app code base and publish to multiple platforms with the same result as if you had done them natively, that is a huge advantage. I'm curiously awaiting the announcements for the next major version. It sounds like hardware accelerated Stage3D will be available. And Native Extensions seem promising. That said I don't think learning native iOS or Android dev would ever be a bad move... Though I think most interactive devs have a pretty full plate already.

Really great breakdown for the practical agency work! One thing that you didn't mention though is using AIR for mobile development on iOS and Android tabs and smartphones. It's got a lot of the same "build once, deploy to a sandbox anywhere" feel that made Flash emerge from the 90's browser wars as a champion, and interesting/innovative UX/FX is still faster to build than with HTML5 (though jQuery mobile is definitely catching up), so games/video heavy apps are a good choice for this if you're trying to get your app out to as many eyeballs as possible.

Either way, well said! May 2012 be the year of the right tool for the job.
